Both national and international studies have shown that there are gender differences between the educational achievements of boys and girls. In Sweden, as in several other European countries, girls achieve clearly higher average grades as well as having a better education completion rate. Participation in further education/training is also clearly gender-dependent and there are signs of widening gender differences in reading skills.

The conference will offer a meeting place and an opportunity to discuss the long term consequences of gender differences in educational achievement, why gender differences arise and various ways to address them.
Approximately 200 participants, representing decision-makers from ministries and government agencies, the European Commission, researchers and other stakeholders in the field are expected to gather for the conference.
The conference will be held in Uppsala on 17 - 18 November 2009 during the Swedish Presidency of the European Union. More information about the Swedish Presidency and the conference can be found on the website www.se2009.eu.
