During a collaborative research in a school in California, fieldworkers in the same site sometimes saw and recorded quite different things, partly because of their different backgrounds and social positions. The observers (and those observed) came from varied racial-ethnic and class backgrounds, which brought the 'absent presence' of 'privileged whiteness' into view.
